Self-Contradictory Proverbs
English
As the saying goes: When the cart reaches the mountain, there will be a road; but another saying goes: Don't turn back until you hit the wall.
As the saying goes: Better to be shattered jade than intact tile; but another saying goes: As long as the green hills remain, there's no worry about firewood.
As the saying goes: Take a step back and the sea is wide and the sky is clear; but another saying goes: When enemies meet on a narrow path, the brave win.
As the saying goes: A prime minister's belly can hold a boat; but another saying goes: He who does not avenge an insult is no gentleman.
......
I've often wondered why there are so many sayings that "adapt to the audience."
Later I realized it's simply because of:
Boundary conditions
Sayings never state their applicable conditions—they just trim their sails to the wind, so most of them are merely hindsight.
When to use which strategy depends entirely on your own circumstances and the situation at the time—there is simply no "universal saying."
So it's better to listen to fewer sayings and accumulate more experience.
Deutsch
