Emotions are information
English
Emotions are like time—they need to flow, not be managed.
They are a kind of information that helps you make judgments through instinct. You need to let them flow naturally so you don't miss critical information.
But at the same time, you can't let them directly influence your behavior, or you'd be no different from an animal. Once you've received the information, how to handle it still requires thinking.
These two steps are extremely difficult, because one is emotional and the other is rational. It takes a great deal of practice to switch freely between them.
The key is:
Adjusting attention
When an emotion forms, pay attention to it and identify the information. Then immediately shift your attention to thinking about the most reasonable way to respond.
Deutsch
