Experience Far Outweighs Knowledge

English

I watched an early episode of Behind the Headlines with Wen Tao, and the guest was Wang Shuo.

When the conversation turned to the War of Resistance, Dou Wentaо and the Daoist both shared some of their own observations, but many of them were directly shot down by Wang Shuo, because having grown up in a military compound, he had access to more firsthand material.

That moment hit me hard:

In the face of practical experience, book knowledge crumbles at a touch.

For example, even if you've read hundreds of books about the Northeast and can talk about it with great fluency, I, as a Northeasterner, only need one sentence—"The reality is different from what's in the books"—to basically demolish your knowledge entirely.

So it comes back to the old saying: What you get from paper always feels shallow; to truly know a thing, you must act it out yourself.

Deutsch
